TAGDev 2.0 University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) leads the change on Gender Inclusivity, Policy Implementation & Mental Health.
From November 13‑14, 2025, TAGDev 2.0 Program at the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) powered a dynamic 2‑day workshop on Gender Inclusivity, Policy Implementation & Mental Health at the Centre for Gas Refining & Petrochemical, University of Port Harcourt. Hosted under the University of Port Harcourt, the Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) in partnership with the Mastercard Foundation, the event gathered student leaders (Student Union Government) and university leaders for an eye‑opening experience.
The digital Vice Chancellor of the University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Abraham Georgewill (Vice‑Chancellor, welcomed participants to the workshop, setting the tone for transformative leadership. The tenacious Program Coordinator, Prof. Ibisime Etela welcomed the workshop participants and highlighted the TAGDev 2.0 program’s vision for gender inclusive and resilient campus communities.
Keynote Highlights from the Workshop;
1. Prof. Mina Ogbanga, Special Envoy and Head of Social Work & Gender Studies at Rivers State University, delivered a powerful address on gender inclusivity, urging the students and University leaders to bridge existing policy gaps.
2. Dr. Adaku A. UbeleJit-Ntem, Acting Director, Centre for Gender, Conflict and Development Studies, University of Port Harcourt, shared concrete steps for embedding gender equity into university policies.
3. Prof. Rosemary Ekechukwu, Director, Centre for Counselling & Human Development, UniPort, emphasized that mental health capacity is the cornerstone of student and University leadership excellence. She took the students and staff through series of mental health exercises while emphasing that wellness sustains influence.
4. Interactive Syndicate Sessions. Both staff and student leaders broke into groups, dissecting current UniPort policies and brainstorming new ones. The participants brainstormed on policy awareness and existence, identified policy gaps and Institutional needs.
The workshop reinforced the 3 Cs of Influence (Calm, Clarity, Compassion) essential for lasting, wellness‑driven leadership.
Dr. Caroline Nnabuo, the Gender Focal Officer of TAGDev 2.0 UniPort, gave a closing remark and thanked everyone for their active participation in the workshop. The workshop equipped the student and university leaders with tools to champion gender‑inclusive policies and prioritize mental health which are critical pillars for a thriving university ecosystem.
